The Scheufelens, a husband and wife from Baden-Württemberg, spent years building the collection before eventually founding the Stiftung Christliche Kunst in Lutherstadt Wittenberg in the year 2001. Thanks to a steady stream of acquisitions and external donations, the collection continues to grow to this day and remains modern and dynamic.

Frequent special exhibitions complement the permanent exhibition. This allows the foundation to shine a spotlight on specific themes, or on artists whose works constitute a fascinating examination of art and religion, unlock new perspectives and can also be regarded as bridge builders of modern and contemporary art.

Every four years, an art prize is awarded to an artist who has rendered outstanding services to the field of Christian art. The foundation’s work also includes organising competitions on specific themes, in order to promote young artists in particular who work with religious content.
